O2 Launches Priority Tickets iPhone App

UK network O2 is making their customers feel special with a new Priority iPhone app, raising the velvet rope early to thousands of the country’s biggest gigs and events.

This free app leverages their sponsorship of a host of UK venues by giving a window of opportunity to O2 customers, letting them snag tickets up to 48 hours before they go on general release. With gig guides, artist search and venue maps complete with directions, Priority looks to be the ideal app for fans of live music.

The carrier doesn’t discriminate either, as they revealed plans to bring the currently Apple-only app to other devices including the O2-exclusive Palm Pre Plus:

“With this app we are making it even easier for [O2 customers] to have incredible experiences that they can share with the people that matter to them the most,” said Jonathan Earle, O2′s head of consumer mobile, in a press release.

“Having launched on the iPhone we now plan to roll out the app to other platforms including Android and WebOS.”

Each major network is truly relying on separating themselves and courting consumers through value adds, with Orange Wednesdays now a necessity for cinema lovers and Vodafone offering a truly VIP festival experience if recent reports are anything to go by.

Dodonpachi Resurrection: Bullet Hell Shooter Rains Down On App Store

Cave Software, fresh from the success of bringing anime-drenched shooter Espgaluda II on the iPhone have decided to convert another crazily-named game from their stable to Apple’s device, Dodonpachi Resurrection.

Available from today at an introductory price of £2.99 (it’ll jump up to £5.49 from the 29th…), Dodonpachi Resurrection is close to an arcade perfect port of another revered entry in the ‘bullet hell’ shoot ‘em up genre, complete with screen-filling bosses, waves of merciless enemies and all new iPhone exclusive play modes and a remixed soundtrack.

The action is so intense in Dodonpachi Resurrection that it can only be handled by latter day iDevices, with the iPhone 3G and original iPod Touches having to sit this bullet storm out. Thankfully there is also a ‘Lite’ version to see if your handset is up to the task before you buy.

Even on the office iPhone 4 the game is a massive memory hog, with frantic missile-dodging gameplay taking a frame rate hit during some particularly large explosions, but it manages to feel part of the fabric of the twitchy gameplay, giving you an extra moment to relish the destruction before it ramps up all over again.

The all-important high-score table is present and correct with OpenFeint powering global rankings for international bragging rights and a set of challenging achievements to unlock.

The touch controls are a little fiddly, as is always the case with games needing swift reflexes on the iPhone, but the steep learning curve is levelled somewhat with a Practice Mode, making learning the risk and reward strategy of attack a lot more accessible than the convoluted modes in Espgaluda II.

It’s not as cheap as a lot of the other shooters on the App Store, but one play of the Lite version will show that Dodonpachi is a cut above in terms of retina-searing graphics, relentless level design and a double shot of sheer arcadey fun.

Besides, how can you not like a game that has you wielding a Supreme Weapon of Annihilation?

Apple iPhone Jailbreak Breaker On The Way, Patches Security Holes

During our brief spell of radio silence enterprising developers finally released a jailbreak solution for Apple’s iOS 4, enabling the iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPhone 4 to be hacked wide open thanks to a gap in the Safari browser’s security protocols.

Apple has been quicker to respond to the issue than ever before, given that this particular jailbreak has revealed a vulnerability in Safari that unscrupulous individuals could equally take advantage of…

Yesterday, an Apple spokesperson said in an official statement that an update to rectify the issue was already on the way, but declined to divulge as to when:

“We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.”

Whilst recent jailbreaks have required dedicated software, tethering to a computer and a modicum of ingenuity, Comex’s JailbreakMe 2.0 ‘Star’ simply requires user to point their device to a website for the exploit to work its PDF-based magic…leading to serious concerns from all sides, including the German Government.

The government agency stated that opening a doctored PDF file could allow criminals unfettered access to the iPhone in its current state, giving the ability to ‘spy on passwords, planners, photos, text messages, e-mails and even listen in to phone conversations,’ advising Geman citizens to exercise caution, according to CBS News.

With the iPhone quickly adopted as the corporate handset of choice for many, the susceptibility of the device to jailbreaks and hacks has serious reprecussions for the business world. Apple’s swiftness to act on these threats will be closely scrutinised, as security and integrity clearly remains a primary concern for the platform’s use in a professional capacity.

BBC Launches Mobile News App

Who says the licence fee doesn’t deliver? Today sees the launch of the BBC News app, initially on the Apple iPhone and iPad, with versions for other platforms due later in the year.

In a blog post the Beeb’s app director, David Madden, outlined the functionality that users can expect from the new apps which aim to put the latest news from BBC journos into the palm of your hand.

The app includes the BBC’s top Stories, UK & International news, Business, Politics, Health, Education, Science and Environment, Technology and Entertainment stories as well as Features and Analysis from correspondents around the world.

Scroll sideways through each news category and move up/down to access more content. Pulling down on the interface allows you to refresh the stories. A neat personalisation feature then lets you re-order the categories to your preference.

The app also has a latest news banner to keep you up to date with breaking headlines and the BBC News Channel streams live to your phone to keep up with the latest news items.

Of course there’s the usual array of sharing functionality, so that you can pass on anything that interests you to friends on social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, or even just via email.

Finally landscape view gives you a handy way to skim through headlines without drilling down into the actual article.

iPad users will be pleased to hear that the iPhone app has been replicated for their tablet-based enjoyment. Click here to see the Beeb’s video demo of the BBC News iPad app.

Users of other platforms might be feeling left out after all that, but the Beeb assures us that versions for Android and Blackberry will follow later this year.

In the meantime, we’ll take this opportunity to remind you that a while ago the BBC developed a series of launcher apps to give you quick access to the BBC News BBC Sport and BBC Mobile websites on Blackberry series 4.3 and above phone.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/bbapps/

Crackberry addicts might do well to check those out while you wait for the new app. Additionally, if you own a BB Bold 2 (9700) or a Storm 2, then you can download a short cut app for BBC iPlayer from that page as well.

New Social Music App Promises New Levels Of Fan Engagement

Today sees the launch of Mobile Backstage, a new socially-enabled music service and mobile app that lets artists and bands keep in touch with their fans.

On the surface, there’s nothing new about that, after all artists seem well versed at keeping us all informed of where they’re playing and what they’re thinking/drinking via Twitter and Facebook. However, Mobile Backstage boasts some pretty impressive levels of interaction, which it claims are in excess of those seen on Facebook or Myspace. Moreover it offers support for not only iPhone but cheaper Java-based handsets, which is a smart move, seeing as the target audience isn’t necessarily going to be of iPhone-owning age.

Dizzee Rascal has already given the app a field trial as have post-hardcore rockers Enter Shikari and emo outfit You Me At Six, who appear to be making good progress with the app already, so we decided to check what the fuss was about.

Mobile Backstage’s range of features include:

-  social interaction between fans and the ability for artists to share their experiences… for instance, moments on the tour-bus.

-  content management system for web and mobile that lets artists and labels to post band updates, images, video clips and tour dates

-  full integration of content from Facebook and Twitter

-  analytics & stats that provide insights into fans and fan behaviour

-  a Foursquare-esque feature which is enabled when fans ‘check-in’ using their phone’s GPS

-  iTunes Music Store integration.

The range of functions offered by Mobile Backstage are sure impressive and although it’s entirely possible that the higher interaction rates might simply be people exploring the new app’s functionality, Mobile Backstage offers do artists a neat one-stop shop for fan interaction and should be considered by anyone looking for an integrated solution for promoting a band / artist.

Stream Republic charges a one-off fee for the service, €990. For fans, the app is free to download.

Capcom iDevice Games Go Cheap For Comic-Con

Inexplicably in honour of the annual geekfest that is the San Diego Comic-Con(vention), Capcom are having a sale on some of their biggest iPhone and iPad games with many top titles down to 59p.

From the survival horror of Resident Evil to the anime courtroom mentalness that is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, we’d advise getting at least a couple of these games whilst they’re going cheap.

A hidden gem amongst the bargains is Dark Void Zero, a lovingly crafted ‘demake’ which took Capcom’s triple-A console title and transported it back to the days of terrible cover art and blowing into cartridges with an 8-bit classic. From the chiptune soundtrack to the simple 2D graphics and rock-hard gameplay, this nostalgia trip is worth every penny.

Check out the full list of offerings below, but bear in mind that deals end on July 25th.

1942: Joint Strike => £0.59

Dark Void Zero => £0.59

Mega Man II => £0.59

Resident Evil 4 => £1.79

Street Fighter IV => £3.99

Resident Evil 4 (iPad Edition) => £1.79

Phoenix Wright => £1.79

Pilgrim’s Punch Out: Pixelated Pugilism Arrives On iPhone

Whilst we wait in paroxysms of nerd excitement for the real Scott Pilgrim videogame – a beautiful union of side-scrolling brawler and the sprite-based artwork of Paul Robertson (check it here) – a downloadable morsel based on the hit comic has been made available for iDevices.

At the low, low price of free, I guess we shouldn’t complain about the icky pixelated graphics or simplistic beat ‘em up gameplay that borrows liberally from its NES namesake, as it does pack a few bonus features to get you geared up about both the movie’s UK release on 25th August, as well as the geek mecca that is Comic-Con 2010.

Packed with trailers, Twitter feeds of the film’s stars and a schedule for this weekend’s main event at the San Diego Convention Center, Pilgrim’s Punch-Out is decidedly average as games go, but is a perfect appetiser to seeing everyone’s favourite slacker make his celluloid debut.

Protect Your iPhone From Knocks, Thievery For £6 Per Month

If you’re one of those people that always has an interesting story that ends in something going missing, getting broken or blown up, then a new iPhone insurance policy from Protect Your Bubble might be of interest…

The gadget insurance company has just launched a cheap iPhone insurance that covers consumers for a whole host of pratfalls – accidental damage, theft, water damage – for only £5.99 per month.

This price covers every model of Apple’s iconic device including the new iPhone 4, and includes coverage anywhere in the world, as well as up to £100 of unauthorised calls to protect you from chatty burglars.

Protect Your Bubble promises a replacement in 48 hours, and they insist that the phones they hand out are brand new handsets rather than reconditioned units. They also offer a backup service for those not well versed in iTunes etiquette, making sure all those texts and contacts stay safe and secure for your next phone.

If you really have that rare magical ability to make mobiles disappear, then loss protection can be added into the bargain for an additional £1 per month.

With most networks offering 18 or 24-month tariffs, your iPhone can fall out of official Apple warranty quite some time before you’re up for an upgrade. This affordable insurance alternative sounds like it gives comprehensive peace of mind for the priciest bit of kit on your person.

Palm WebOS and Apple iOS Get Software Updates, Users Not Happy

Both Palm and Apple have rolled out device software updates today, and both are reportedly shipping with some problems…

Apple’s iOS 4.0.1 update is reported to bring a fix to the on-going antenna issue, and it does, inasmuch as it makes the signal bars on the screen look a bit bigger. That’s it.

Okay, they’ve tinkered with the algorithm for showing the bars – meaning that the handset will be less generous in doling them out when in areas of low reception – but this update fails to rectify the core issue of losing signal when covering the lower left portion of the iPhone 4.

Worse still, early installers are reporting problems with getting the software onto their iPhones in the first place.

The Register cites brilliantly named user DiscoRobbo finding fault with attempting to perform the install on his computer, and going to Apple’s forums for help:

“On a Win7 PC. Plugged the iPhone 4 in this morning and told there’s an update. Ran it, and it errored during the install – I now have a brick. Now had to do a full restore, and I guess I’ll have to try again.”

With a whirlwind of negative press surrounding the device (including an incensed Whoopi Goldberg recently ‘murdering’ her iPhone 4), today’s impromptu press conference is possibly one of the most important for Apple in recent memory.

In a year that has seen Apple launch two of their most successful products of all time, that’s saying something.

Palm’s new WebOS update sees the diddy Pre and Pixi – as well as their ‘Plus’ incarnations – get a boost to version 1.4.5, complete with an embarrassing issue.

Whilst this update was supposed to unlock the power of Palm’s devices as mobile gaming powerhouses, there is a tiny bug that actually prevents software from having unfettered access to the handset’s internal architecture, resulting in lock-outs and crashes for a number of apps.

The very ones they were trying so hard to promote.

Not so much of an issue for end users, but budding developers have become suitably annoyed with the situation.

Palm took to their developer forum to address the issue, stating it would have taken longer to fix than simply releasing a broken update:

“We’ve spent the last week attempting to address this issue in a way that would not require restarting the carrier certification process, but we’ve concluded that this is not possible. Restarting certification would delay 1.4.5 substantially and could result in some wireless operators not taking the update at all.”

Better buggy than late, eh?

O2 customers should be able to receive their busted over-the-air WebOS updates any time now, whilst iPhone 4 owners looking for bigger signal bars should connect their device to iTunes (and gear up for some disappointment!).

Proporta Shine Cases: Soften iPhone 4′s Tough Exterior With Colourful Covers

Whether you consider it a design marvel or glorified paperweight, the iPhone 4 certainly looks like a toy for the boys.

Getting rid of the iPhone 3GS’ curvaceous rear and plastic frame, replacing it with more squared edges, metal accenting and the sparse utalitarian look has certainly reclaimed Apple’s device for the gadget geeks amongst us.

Well, Proporta have aimed to put a stop to this by releasing a selection of iPhone cases that boast enough gloss, leather and reflective surfaces to get the iPhone 4 back into the lookbooks of female fashionistas.

Available in red, blue or black, these Shine cases protect as well as provide a style statement by smothering the iPhone in its entireity, flipping open to reveal a snazzy inner lining, complete with make-up check mirror.

Whether this will get the iPhone 4 out of the shirt pocket and into the purse remains to be seen, but it’s definitely a new look for the device, and at £24.95 it costs a bit less than Apple’s official ‘DeathGrip’ solution…
