Won’t Someone Think of the Children?

Who doesn’t love studies that make controversial statements with no proof of causation? A new one has found links between mothers’ use of mobile phones during pregnancy and behavioural problems in their children in later life.
The study, conducted by UCLA and a Danish university, sampled around 13,000 children. It found that children whose mother used a mobile phone “two or three” times a day had increased likelihood of developing behavioral problems, including hyperactivity and “difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships by the time they reached school age”. If a child used a mobile phone before the age of 7 they were also doomed; the same study found that the early use of mobile phones also contributes to behavioral problems.
Surprisingly, scientists have no idea how to biologically explain this causal relationship. Perhaps the children’s minds were eroded by downloaded ringtones.
