iPhone Now Available On Orange, O2 Offers Free iPhone Broadband Package, Vodafone Claims Fastest iPhone Downloads

A big day as the Apple iPhone is now available from UK network Orange, who began selling the handset through their stores and online from 7 o’clock this morning.

This marks the end of two years exclusivity for O2, previously the sole carrier of the coveted device.

Both the iPhone 3G and 3GS models are available from Orange, with prepay, pay monthly and business tariffs available.

Despite pricing awfully close to O2’s offerings, the iPhone on Orange boasts far more widespread 3G coverage in a multi-million pound ad campaign, as well as far more places to buy it with Phones4U and many third party retailers now allowed to offer the iPhone.

With over 600,000 people registering their interest on the Orange site (not to mention the thousands here!), and apps to take advantage of exclusive offers like Orange Wednesdays, there are a lot of folks waiting for the iPhone to break free of the O2 shackles…

Not to be outdone, O2 themselves made an eleventh hour retaliation by offering a bargain broadband deal for those thinking of wandering off (which they are now free to do).

O2 has launched “Total Connectivity,” a service which offers free O2 home broadband when new and existing customers plump for an Internet Tethering ‘bolt-on’ on their iPhone.

Anyone shelling out the required £9.79 per month before the 31st of December 2009 then is hooked up to free broadband, meaning you’re connected both home and away. A clever move, and far easier than any pesky price cuts…

Vodafone, latecomer to the iPhone party that they are, still won’t be celebrating with a launch until 2010 but has taken the opportunity to drum up business today by proclaiming the ‘fastest downloads’.

A promo e-mail from Vodafone to prospective buyers announces themselves as the network for streaming on the go:

“We’ve been out and about testing our network across the UK. Whilst our guys were watching the latest YouTube clips on the iPhone they found that Vodafone delivered the fastest download time for a 10 minute video”.

It seems that whichever network you are on, it won’t be long until you can get your iPhone fix. We’ll be sure to compare contracts from all the retailers on our new iPhone deals page!
