Carnival of the Mobilists #205 – Happy New Decade!

By Ernest Doku

2010 made of sparks and fireworksHi, and welcome to the first Carnival of the Mobilists for 2010!

It’s our hosting debut here at Omio, and we’re especially honoured to be ringing in a new decade with Carnival #205, fresh from gorging on Xmas excess and spending a little too much time with our nearest and dearest…

Thankfully exciting events in the world of mobile have continued unabated, meaning a new selection of articles looking at the changing face of the industry, as well as casting an analytical eye as to what the future has in store.

Ajit Jaoker kicks off proceedings with an interesting post on mobile cloud computing and its benefit for operators.

The emerging idea of a ‘cloud’ component to mobile apps definitely bears some thinking about, with manufacturers quickly expanding their connectivity efforts across entire ranges of handsets rather than just high-end smartphones (bada, Ovi Store).

David Doherty points us in the direction of a video interview with ‘billionaire doctor’ Patrick Soon-Shiong, highlighting the increasing importance of mobile phones in the delivery of health care.

Alexei Polyakov divulges an in-depth report on the state of mobile social networking in Japan.

Antoine Wright has an insightful piece on rethinking the versatility of browser bookmarks, particularly considering the mobile web server as a personal bookmarks server.

Chetan Surma has an expansive and comprehensive survey of mobile industry predictions for 2010, as well as a brilliant wrap-up of the previous decade in the market.

From the emergence of cameraphones and the advent of touchscreens to the phoenix-like resurrection of Motorola, all are covered.

As for 2010, all eyes seem to be on Google and the growth of mobile advertising…definitely interesting  to see if the torrent of forthcoming Android handsets will shake Apple’s seemingly unwavering grip on the market.

Finally, my personal favourite of this week is a great article on comic strips being a perfect fit for the mobile platform from Steve Smith on Mobile Insider.

Well, that’s it! Have a great new year, and let’s hope that space year 2010 is filled with lots more interesting developments, surprises and mobile phone news!
