Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2: Smartphone Sequel Leaked?

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 was one of Omio’s most hotly anticipated handsets ever, but was admittedly a slight disappointment upon release as we found the handset too underpowered to perform its high-end duties and the much-hyped panels somewhat less impressive in person.

Nevertheless, it seems that Sony Ericsson are determined to get it right second time around if these leaked images of the Xperia X2 are to be believed!

The form factor seems largely unchanged, still a QWERTY slider with a lot of chrome and a lot of buttons, but the specs have been impressively beefed up to have the X2 stand shoulder to shoulder with today’s smartphone heavyweights.

The biggest changes are in the touchscreen department, which will apparently be a 3.5″ OLED display (up from 3″ on the original device), whilst the camera will now be an 8.1 megapixel autofocus lens. All those claims that the original Xperia was a slouch will also be but to bed as the internal processor will see a boost, as will the RAM to 512MB.

Running on a Sony-souped up Windows Mobile 6.5, the Xperia X2 will see the return of the famous panels, which will apparently feature far more by way of features, including PS3 remote play (as seen on the media-savvy Sony Ericsson Aino), as well as being ready to be upgraded to Windows Mobile 7 whenever that rolls around.

Exciting news indeed. If the X2 adopts a more responsive capacative touchscreen like the Samsung i8910 HD, we should see a far slicker and more enjoyable experience this time around!

With no word of where in Sony Ericsson’s schedule the X2 is due to turn up, we just beg that it doesn’t face as many delays and setbacks as the X1! Speed is certainly of the essence, there is certainly no shortage of sexy smartphones on the horizon…
