New Handset To Be Covered In E-Ink

There has been a lot of news about a futuristic technology which allows digital moving text to be placed on the cover of magazines, as Esquire will be the first to use it for their 75th anniversary October issue. Newspapers looking like those in that bit of Minority Report, displaying breaking news and video directly onto paper could well become a reality.

The technology for the magazine may not be that advanced with it only lasting for 90 days due to needing a small battery to power it, but a new mobile phone from Hitachi will do the same for a lot longer. Like a more elaborate o2 Cocoon, the outside of its clam shell cover will have a 2.7″ E-ink display to show all manner of moving pictures.

The Hitachi W61H is designed by the curiously capitalised SeKiYuRiO, and the external cover will switch between a wide array of ornate images depending on the function, receiving calls or messages for instance.

Judging by the image above, it is going to be blessed with images of butterflies and flowers, but how long before they can be customisable? An animated flaming skull, the logo of a favoured beverage, an image of the caller, even the Crazy Frog! All great, all entirely original, and not annoying to others in the slightest. The future of downloadable themes just got a lot more frightening…
