iPhone 3G On Sale Worldwide, People Buy It
In a far cry from the disappointing launch last year, people purchased Apple’s new iPhone 3G with glee as it finally went on sale this morning.
The first ones sold from o2 stores at 8.02 a.m. (do you see?), a midnight launch avoided to prevent smug iPhone owners getting roughed up trying to take their prized possessions home. However, The Register had reports of the activation system behaving a little temperamentally, with people still not signed up an hour later.
o2 reports that the earlier issues have since been ironed out, with everything running smoothly. However, may say it is running much more smoothly now they took to signing people up to the cutting edge device…with a pen and paper.
The early birds certainly got the worm this time, and with stocks looking thin on the ground for the foreseeable future, there may be a lot of disappointed customers. The online ordering process quickly sold out, and delivery could be as late as August for some… Never has a phone been such a victim of its own success. Even people without even a passing interest in Apple’s sleek and pricey gadgets have worked themselves up into a lather over what many see as the all-in-one entertainment solution.
iPhone 1.0 kids need not feel left out, as the update allowing access to the myriad of quirky titles on the App Store was released also.
The global rollout has been a huge success too, where quite literally some people queued up, and then bought some phones all over the place. Although dismissed as a bit of a fad, even the Japanese otaku have queued up in front of Softbank shops swayed by the iPhone 3G’s aesthetic charms.
We’ll be giving our calmer, more considered impressions of the iPhone 3G when our damned handset arrives! We’re still waiting, Apple…
