GTA On iPhone? Probably Not…

An exciting viral video has popped up on a site named coming-on-iphone.com, showing off what very much looks like a rendition of hit series Grand Theft Auto, but on the iPhone!

The pre-rendered sequence (embedded in an iPhone-shaped window) shows a bank job and high speed car chase through the streets of a city, with a high-powered SUV evading the cops. So far, so GTA…

However, with Rockstar vocally denouncing any involvement with the (slightly amateurish) effort, we’re left thinking that it might be a port of another GTA clone that did well on handsets a while back.

Gangstar: Crime City was a title from Gameloft offering a guns and gangs experience shrunk down for mobiles, but which successfully evoked the fast and loose feel of earlier 2D entries in the GTA franchise.

Could this video be the introductory sequence to a next-gen Crime City? Gameloft are no strangers to the mobile gaming mockbuster, with hack-and-slash God of War homage Hero of Sparta performing well in the App Store charts late last year.

With this video drumming up interest in all corners of the web, they certainly have gotten one thing right. We have no idea what’s coming on iPhone!
