T-Mobile G1 Review Round Up!

By Ernest Doku

The torrent of reviews on the internet for the G1 have been overwhelming to say the least! We at Omio are doing the honourable thing, cutting them into small pieces to deliver the most succulent morsels to you, dear reader!

Engadget : “…The G1 isn’t going to blow anyone’s mind right out of the gate. Looking only at the hardware, there’s nothing here that’s particularly impressive, yet nothing that’s particularly bad (though the GPS needs some work). It’s a fine, solidly designed device that has enough style to please most users — but it won’t win a ton of beauty pageants. Think of it this way: if it were running Windows Mobile, it’d be a footnote in HTC’s history.”

Ouch.

More review mash-ups follow!

Ars Technica : “…The T-Mobile G1 Google smartphone, designed by Google and made by HTC, remains firmly in the shadow of the iPhone—for now. The phone, which goes on sale next week in the US and next month in Britain, was released too early. The HTC hardware and Android OS that powers it lack the polish and depth of even the iPhone 1.0 in most respects. It’s not a bad phone, but the software and hardware needed more time in the oven to bring them to a golden brown crispness.”

Wow.

AllThingsD : “…This first Android phone, which was largely designed by Google and built by Taiwan-based HTC, also includes some key features Apple omitted. These include a limited ability to copy and paste text, and the ability to send photos directly to other phones without relying on email, a common phone feature called MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service. And, unlike AT&T (T), T-Mobile (DT) will even allow users to legally unlock the phone after 90 days and start using it on another carrier, provided you pay a hefty early-termination fee.

Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers.”

Better…

Time : “Most first-generation gadgets aren’t really worth the bother. They’re overpriced, buggy, hard to figure out and break too easily. But the G1 is none of these things. Not only is it worth your while, the Google phone is easily the most exciting new tech product of the year…If the iPhone is the beauty, then the G1 is the brains..spend more than five minutes with the G1, which runs on Google’s new Android operating system, and you’ll uncover its inner brilliance…The $179 G1 is the one smartphone that won’t make you jealous of people with an iPhone.”

Sounds good!

So, a mixed bag all in all. The G1 didn’t set the world on fire, nor was it a damb squib. Seems like the top shelf mags respect T-Mobile and HTC for flying in the face of the Apple juggernaut, coming out with a decent handset at the other side.

What do we think? Oh, we will let you know once we get a look…

One Response

I think the G1 is going to be very popular, not sure if they have sold the 1.5 Million as reported but a worthy competitor to the iPhone.

Lots of reviews of the G1 are available on my blog: http://g1phone.blogspot.com
