Samsung i8910 To Lose Omnia HD Name?

Mobile Crunch has reported that the second big-name handset to come out of Samsung in 2009 is to lose its Omnia HD monicker, and will only answer to i8910.
Why? Well, apparently, it is in order to maintain a distinction between the i900 Omnia which runs on Windows Mobile, and this new Symbian-powered device.
Does this mean that the ‘Omnia’ name and Windows are now betrothed to one another? The brand didn’t seem so aligned when we interviewed the UK General Manager of Samsung, but I guess marketing directions can shift…
This impressive handset seemed to fit the Omnia HD name so well, with the high definition recording capability and luxury nature of the device. And the size and clarity of that screen…wow! Our Omnia HD playback video does not do it justice!
This isn’t the first time we’ve been confused by Samsung naming conventions, we wrote some unkind words when they went from Primera to Samsung INNOV8 for the i8510. Nevertheless, we know that if they are willing to undo all the traction that the Omnia HD name and huge marketing spend it has seen so far, there must be good reason to do so.
Samsung i8910 it is, then.
