Virgin And Tesco Mobile Offer ‘Unlimited’ Tariffs
Whilst searching for a contract at the major mobile networks, it is often easy to overlook the smaller ones offering big savings on SIM-only deals.
This time is the turn of Tesco Mobile, offering a contract which offers everything for a mere £30 per month.
Tesco’s deal gives users unlimited calls, texts, web browsing and picture messaging, the only caveat being that you have to bring your own mobile to the party.
I know what you’re thinking, “How much does unlimited really mean?” Well, this once, it means A LOT. Tesco claims fair usage is as much as £500, meaning that each £1 spent offers about £16.67 worth of credit! That is the equivalent of 125MB of data, 2,500 minutes or 5,000 texts depending on how you split it.
Awesome news, but hold your horses if you’re looking for a cheap way to surf to your heart’s content. The SIM card cannot be used as a modem, nor can you download or continually stream audio/video content according to the providers.
This puts paid to the idea of getting tons of files to your phone, but making it a decent offer nonetheless.
Not to be outdone, Virgin Mobile have offered their own alternative SIM only deal, only a little less immediately appealing…
£65 per month on an 18 month tariff nets unlimited minutes, texts and web browsing, whilst calling other Virgin Mobile customers is free! The downside is that the contract requires an 18 month commitment, and you must already be signed up to Virgin Media.
The upside? They do come with handsets this time, the Nokia N86 8MP and the Samsung Jet offered are both great phones but more mid-range than expected from such a weighty pay monthly deal.
So, what is Virgin’s definition of unlimited? Well, a tad different from Tesco as the caps are 1GB of data per month, and 3,000 minutes between cross-network calls and those to other Virgin customers. Oh, and paper billing is an extra £1.25. Per month.
Not looking cheap alongside the penny-savvy supermarket chain, but a good deal nonetheless. Tesco’s offer is available right now, whilst Virgin’s will be along in a minute…
