Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s the Nokia Superman Phone!

By Suzanne Morrow

Sorry, cliche I know but I couldn’t resist.

Nokia presented loads of Verizon handsets at CTIA this week most of them were variations on designs we’ve seen before but there was one stand out phone amongst all that beige.

According to reports, Nokia and Verizon will be launching a new high-end, full-touch QWERTY slider phone, to hit UK shops this November. The new Nokia Superman handset is set to coincide with the latest installment of the Superman trilogy, “Superman Prevails”.

The new Verizon Nokia Superman will prominently feature in the trilogy and will have a heavily themed promotional campaign running along side it.

With a full pull-out QWERTY keyboard the phone looks a lot like the N97. It’s due to have a 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen, 12 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss lens, Xenon flash, HD video recording, 64GB of internal memory and will run on a Linux operating system.

[Update: Omio got hoodwinked by the swines at unwiredview.com. Why I oughta!!  We have since found out the story was an April Fools gag - apologies if you wanted a Nokia Superman phone!]

Microsoft Office Coming To The iPhone

By Suzanne Morrow

quick

It was announced at this weeks CITA, the wireless tradeshow in Vegas.

iPhone users will soon be able to get Microsoft Word on their phones with a new app, the Quickoffice for iPhone.

Back in October last year, Dataviz, already had a similar app for the iPhone as part of their “Documents to Go” line but it lacked any Word editing capabilities and they were reticent to give an exact date for a release.

Quickoffice will offer font formatting, text selection, bulleting and cut and paste functions within Word documents. You’ll be able to use Excel spreadsheets, stats functions and recalculate entries to insert and re-size rows and columns.

One of the biggest criticisms from business users was that the iPhone didn’t support business applications and didn’t have the email functionaility of other handsets (the Blackberry for instance) but this latest move is an obvious attempt to provide for a section of the market that Apple had otherwise sidestepped.

And good news iPhone fans, you can expect the Quickoffice as soon as next week.

First Pics OF HTC Snap: BlackBerry Bold Clone

By Suzanne Morrow

htc1

HTC revealed the HTC Snap at CITA yesterday.

There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking or revolutionary about the mid range handset and with it’s full QWERTY keyboard, it bears a striking resemblance to a BlackBerry Bold.

The phone has everything you’d expect from a quality smartphone: HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth with A2DP, 2.4 inch QVCA display, 2MP camera micro SDHA expansion slot and a Window’s Mobile 6.1 OS beneath HTC’s Touch Flo interface.

Snap’s design team have also taken a leaf out of the RIM’s book by dropping the Dpad for a “jog ball” scroller.

HTC havn’t released any price details yet but have said they’ll be launching the Snap phone in Q2. Which could, in fairness, mean either tomorrow or as far away as June.

The Snap will be renamed as the HTC S721 for US customers and will be available this summer.

Now, feel free to insert the appropriate breakfast cereal, obscure late eighties dance troupe reference.

Lenovo Phone Resurfaces: Launch Date Imminent?

By Suzanne Morrow

lenovo

Pictures have surfaced of the much anticipated new Lenovo phone.

When we first saw it at the end of 2008, the UI was looking very apple’y and new pictures, from PConline.com,showing the updated phone in all its glory, does nothing to distance Lenovo from iPhone aesthetics.

If the rumours are true the Lenovo phone is to have onboard TV, courtesy of the CMMB options and an increased memory capacity with the addition of an inbuilt micro SD card. It’ll have Wi-Fi along with TD-SCDMA connectivity and will come with an inbuilt 5 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus.

As is the fashion lately, the phone has an open source operating system. The Open Mobile Operating Sytem  is a modified version of the Google Android OS.

Previous predictions put the official launch date of the Lenovo phone around April time but these unofficial shots point to a much later date for the China Mobile device.

Bad teeth, bowler hats, impeccable manners, Burberry. It may have a terrible rep here but outside of the UK it’s seen as being quite classy.

iPhone Apps Glamourise Gangsta Gun Culture

By Suzanne Morrow

guns

iPhone apps glamourise gun violence, it seems.

The latest app which turns the iPhone into a toy gun is causing a bit of rucous among anti-gun campaigners.

It’s not really surprising when you consider what the app’s makers makers have to say about it:

“experience the sweet release you can only get from a finely crafted fire arm – a firearm so smooth and well-balanced it feels like an extension of your own hand”.

PR-schpeel like that’s sure to rub some people up the wrong way.

Games like Bang, Bang, Tak Tak and Boom Boom offer a series of “turn your iPhone into a gun type apps” for as little as 59p.

Last year, Apple agreed to remove Slasher; a game that mimics a stabbing sequence using a knife, after pressure from consumers. So far there aren’t any plans to remove any of the existing gun apps.

John Beyer of mediawatch UK told the Metro: “In view of recent events in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, I think anything that glamorises guns and shooting is in extremely poor taste.

“I would hope that whoever is responsible for this would withdraw it immediately.”

Morally irresponsible or harmless fun?

Drop us a line and tell us what you think about the iPhone gun apps.

Nokia Point & Find Hits The UK

By Suzanne Morrow

point

Nokia has launched a beta version of their “Point and Find” service.  With the app you can point your phone at “real life” objects and you’ll magically get sent all sorts of relevant information about whatever it was you snapped.

The new version Nokia “Point & Find” focuses on movies and is available to UK and US customers. With “Point & Find” you can point your phone at a poster for a new movie and the phone will work out which film it is, show you a trailer for it, some short video clips, reviews and find the closest cinema where it’s playing

When the phone recognises the object, in this case the movie poster, it uses its database of virtually tagged items to return sets of relevant links about its content and services. It’s all done by real time image processing, integrating GPS positioning technology with category-specific text-entry search. Pretty straightforward.

So far the beta version of the app only works on certain phones. Here’s a quick list of compatible handsets – N82, N95, N95 8GB, N76, N81k, E51, E66, 6110 Navigator and 5700 XpressMusic.

Point and Find can be downloaded in the UK and the States here.

Samsung Instinct Mini Officially Revealed

By Suzanne Morrow

instincts30

Samsung have officially revealed their Instinct Mini, otherwise known as the S30. The phone is the follow-up to the original Sprint Instinct.

The announcement was first made on Samsung’s Korean site.

The big official unveiling is expected to take place at the International CTIA  2009 Wireless Convention in the next couple of weeks.

The Instinct S30 was first spotted in the wild way back at the beginning of March, but it took until the end of the month for Samsung to confirm that the S30 was a replacement, not simply a compact version of the original.

Along with the touch screen there will be the same GPS, EVDO Rev.A and Bluetooth of its predecessor.
